Lesson 2 – Girls’ Bodies

Slide 1-5 - Introduction

Click through the slides and ask for volunteers to define the following words:

• Body
• Hair
• Growing
• Puberty

You could play this as a game where the volunteer describes the word and other children try to guess it (reveal the slide after children have guessed).

If any of the words are unknown to children, say that they will be explained in today’s episode. Introduce the content of today’s film as something to be mature about.

Miss Nichols teaches the ‘puberty lesson’ in school which freaks the main characters out. We then focus on Leyla’s response, especially her anxiety about wearing a bra. Eventually, her sister helps her out.

Use the Lucky Dip Questions in Appendix 1 to generate discussion.

Alternatively, here are some discussion points you can use to facilitate a conversation with pupils about the drama.

• What does the teacher say will change for girls during puberty? (hair growth, breast developing, genitals getting bigger, hormonal changes etc. Menstruation and PMS are not mentioned by the teacher but are covered in Delving Deeper below)
• What is Leyla’s reaction to the lesson and do you understand it?
• Does Siobhan make Leyla feel better or worse? How?
• Should Leyla worry that her breasts haven’t started developing yet, while other girls her age might have?
• What does it mean to feel self-conscious? Have you ever felt self-conscious?
• Why do you think Leyla didn’t feel comfortable talking to her Mum or sister Cassie about how she was feeling?
• What does Cassie say to make Leyla feel better?
• Does Leyla need to feel embarrassed about her body changing? Why?

Slide 8 - Film: Delving Deeper into Episode 2

“Delving Deeper” is a presenter-led film which highlights some of the key ideas presented in the film, gives some teaching and provides a Christian context by linking to the Kester storyline.

This teaching includes:

Girls’ development through puberty in the following ways:
• Growth spurt
• Hair growth underarms and genital area
• Perspiration – so use deodorant!
• Oily skin – can cause spots!
• Breasts develop in stages
o First is “buds,” or swellings, under a girl’s nipples. After that her breasts will get bigger and fuller, and may feel a little sore at times.
o How large or small a girl’s breasts will be depends on the physical, genetic traits in her family. It takes two to three years for breasts to reach their permanent size.
• Hips widen and waist narrows
• Genitals enlarge a little on the outside, but inside a girls vagina gets longer and uterus gets bigger
• Girls start menstruation (getting periods), which signal that she is growing up and her body is getting ready for any future pregnancies – but we’ll be talking about that in more detail soon!

Reminders to children that:
• Their body is a gift from God
• It deserves respect from themselves and other people
• Boundaries are useful to respect ourselves and keep ourselves safe.
• Privates are private.

Slide 9 - Personal Activity: Paradise Street Workbook - Girls' Bodies

Children should complete the ‘Girl’s Bodies’ activity in their Paradise Street Workbooks.

Today’s activity about girl’s bodies provides an opportunity for children to consolidate factual learning and consider how a girl might feel about the changes facing her.

It is advisable for children to complete these workbook activities independently. You might like to play music in the background to encourage focus, before bringing the class back together to conclude.

Slide 10 - Reflection

Invite children to close eyes and listen to the following reflection read by teacher:

“Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out;
you formed me in my mother’s womb.
I thank you, High God—you’re breathtaking!
Body and soul, I am marvellously made!
I worship in adoration—what a creation!
You know me inside and out,
you know every bone in my body;
You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit,

Sit in silence for a moment and ask God to help you know that your body is incredible and made in His image.
