Albert Einstein was both a scientist and a philosopher. He was a seeker of wisdom. Like Socrates, he knew that the wise person begins with what they don’t know. In fact, he said of himself ‘Its not that I’m so smart. I just stay with the questions longer.’ Perhaps a more famous quote of his is this:
We felt it was important to prompt that spirit of questioning in our RE Deep Dive programme.
So we have now added starter and follow-up questions visible beneath each RE Deep Dive video. All subscribers can also download the full set of questions as an overview with the link provided on each of the RE Deep Dive Pathway pages.
Using Questions for Staff Training
Starter questions provide a springboard into the video. Follow-up questions are a way to go deeper into the subject, reflect on what’s been learned and apply it to the classroom.
Perhaps you are an RE Lead and as part of a scheduled CPD session, you have allocated certain videos to watch. If so, staff might make brief notes on their response to questions or other points that came from watching the videos.
If watching as a group, the starter questions provide a simple way in. An icebreaker. A moment to reflect. An opportunity to gauge prior knowledge.
The follow-up question can also open up a more extended time of reflection and sharing. During this RE Leads can:
- Invite staff to ask questions
- Facilitate discussion about teaching the topic and the sharing of ideas
- Learn about staff subject knowledge and where more support could be helpful
