Liturgical Year: Ascension
Gospel: Luke 24: 46-53
Rather than the Sunday Gospel, this week's Gospel is from Ascension Day itself which this year is celebrated on Thursday 30th May. In the Gospel passage, we hear Jesus' final words on earth before His ascension to heaven - He affirms to the disciples that after He has returned to heaven, they will be “clothed with the power from on high” - the Holy Spirit.
As we anticipate the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, this week's prayers help children to think about all the ways that Jesus helped and taught the disciples while on earth. By doing this, we can think about the ways that Jesus also helps us from heaven and by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus wants to be involved in every aspect of our lives. The prayers this week help children to discover how Jesus wants to help them and invites them to ask for and accept His help in every part of their lives!
HOW TO LEAD
The Prayer Leader can be a child if you wish.
The first slide each day introduces children to a way in which Jesus helped and taught His disciples.
The Prayer Leader expands on the example of how Jesus helped and taught His disciples and invites children to think of a way they can do the same, with Jesus' help:
- Monday - How to pray.
- Tuesday - How to bring healing to others.
- Wednesday - How to have courage when we are afraid.
- Thursday - How to live life to the full.
- Friday - How to be a good friend
Opportunity for a silent moment of reflection, concluding with the Our Father that everyone says together – this is the prayer Jesus gave us to help teach us how to pray. For younger children who might not know the Our Father so well, this could be a good opportunity to start learning it!
