Liturgical Year: Ash Wednesday
Gospel: Matthew 6: 1-6, 16-18
In this week's Gospel, Jesus says this: "But when you pray, go to your private room and, when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in that secret place, and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you."
Lent gives us the opportunity to move into a new season in the life of the Church which mirrors the seasons in nature. In nature, we are moving from winter into spring - darkness to light, hibernation to new life. Similarly, Lent gives us the opportunity to prepare for the 'spring' of Easter - to prepare for the new life Jesus brings - by 'cleaning' and sprucing ourselves up ready for Easter and leaving the cold, dark winter behind. Just as we clean our homes and rooms to make our home welcoming, we can clean our hearts to welcome Jesus.
The prayers this week help children to go into their 'private room' - their hearts - to meet with God the Father and reflect on how they might need to 'spring clean' their hearts and lives ready to meet the risen Jesus in a new way at Easter.
Each day has a different aspect of our life that may need 'spring cleaning':
Monday: Hearts - Introduction to week's prayers and connecting to our hearts.
Tuesday: Minds - attitudes, thoughts about ourselves and others.
Wednesday: Actions - daily life and habits.
Thursday: Relationships - with others and ourselves.
Friday: Souls - saying sorry and being close to God.
HOW TO LEAD
Children are reminded of the Gospel verse for the week and that Lent is a great time to 'clean up' our hearts and lives ready for the 'spring' of Easter.
Music plays automatically and continues over the next slides. Children are invited to go into their hearts - the room where God the Father wants to meet with them and speak with them.
In the silence of their hearts, children reflect on an aspect of their life. Prompts are offered for children to meet with Jesus and think about how to 'spring clean' their hearts and lives ready for Jesus' resurrection at Easter
Finish by saying the prayer on the slide together. Manually fade out music.
