Liturgical Year: The Presentation Of Our Lord
Gospel: Luke 2: 22-40
In the Gospel passage this week, we see Mary and Joseph fulfilling Jewish law by presenting the baby Jesus at the temple to receive a blessing and as a symbol of thanksgiving to God. While they were in the temple, Simeon and Anna - upright people of God - recognised Jesus as the Christ. They knew immediately that Jesus was a very special baby who the world had been waiting a long time for. They blessed Him and praised God because of Him.
Inspired by this passage, and the verses in Psalm 139 below, the prayers this week are about recognising ourselves and each other as precious, unique creations of God that He loved long before we were born:
‘You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.’
Psalm 139: 13-14
Through a series of simple reflective activities, children will consider their unique qualities and their place within the human family.
